The centre of gravity calculations

The centers of gravity of the EU Member States for the project At Home Anywhere are calculated using ESRI and Safe software. For most countries this is done on the basis of the data set EuroBoundaryMap version 2.0. This is a topographic data set that covers the whole of Europe on a scale of 1 to 100,000. This means that 1 cm on the map is a simplification of 100,000 cm in reality. This is the most accurate dataset for the whole of Europe, which is available through Eurogeographics.

For the calculation of the centers of gravity only land mass is used the water is disregarded. This means for example that the Netherlands Frisian Islands are included in the calculation, but the Waddenzee and IJselmeer are not. The geographical center is the average xy coordinate of the country. For some countries, the geographical center lies in the sea. This has to do with the weight of islands.

The calculations are made by the Dutch Land Measurement Institute Kadaster www.kadaster.nl.
